Case Studies
Stryker
Stryker Orthobiologics, Orthovita, Inc., AtriCure, Biom’up, Cerapedics, Dilon Technologies, Sensible Medical, TELA Bio (to name a few)
What started with one illustration for one product manager evolved into hundreds of print, digital, and video assignments across 15 product lines as well as multiple divisions within Stryker. And it didn’t stop there! As associates moved on in their respective careers with AtriCure, Biom’up, Cerapedics, Dilon Technologies, Sensible Medical, and TELA Bio (to name a few), they all reached out to continue the outstanding working relationship at their new companies.
The original challenge was to create a look and feel that conveys “high-end science” for multiple, evolving product lines. After Orthovita, Inc. was acquired by Stryker, all imagery and graphic design needed to function within the standards of the Stryker Style Guide.
The result is an incredible, two-decade long collaboration with the original Orthovita and Stryker sales and marketing team (continuing in their new endeavors) that has given an effective, recognizable look to all their product offerings and internal training tools across multiple companies.
Assets were created across multiple platforms including medical illustration, medical animation, motion graphics, video editing, technical illustration, information graphics, graphic design, 3D printing, logo design, packaging design, brand guidelines, and even interior design.
Cerapedics
Digital Product Illustrations, MOAs, and Animation servicing patients and practitioners in multiple countries.
It’s always great to hear from a previous client in their new company! What started out as three illustrations to depict key product differentiators turned into illustrated and animated Mechanisms of Action for both US and UK health markets.
After that, it evolved into a model of efficiency for Cerapedics. Instead of trying to cobble together product photos spanning years (and styles) or contract one photographer to do the job, Cerapedics contracted me to create all of the products, packaging, and material-handling illustrations as CGI assets that could all be rendered within the same controlled 3-D environment time and time again.
Assets were created across multiple platforms including “CGI photography”, medical illustration, medical animation, video editing, and 3D printing.

TELA Bio
Multimedia Assets spanning global health markets with a focus on healthcare providers.
Collaborating with TELA Bio began with an outstanding previous client reaching out to help with graphics support during times in which the in-house US team was inundated. What began as simple ads and graphics for social media outlets evolved into full-blown corporate decks, illustration, animation, and graphic design to support their many facets of educational materials focused on healthcare providers. All of this has evolved into providing graphics support for the company’s UK team.
TELA Bio has required a broad spectrum of graphic needs including, but not limited to, medical illustrations, symposium-graphics collateral (posters, signage, postcards, announcements, etc.), IFU illustration and layout, Surgical Technique guides, field samples, corporate and sales decks, product marketing digital and print materials, social media graphics and ads, product animation, comprehensive video editing, corporate videos, logos, and packaging labels.
Tenex Health / Trice Medical
A major market disruptor in the treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers and beyond.
Tenex Health recognized a pain point in the market for treating diabetic foot ulcers and needed illustrations to support their revolutionary composite treatment that improves patient outcomes by effectively treating the root cause of diabetic foot ulcers…boney prominence(s) causing pressure ulceration. Since the essential physics that make the handheld device effective are difficult to see or understand, Tenex approached me to first illustrate the technology in action and then later create a comprehensive product animation, subsequent technique applications across other orthopedic maladies, and a schematic illustration to help practitioners understand the interconnectivity of the device components.
With everything passing through a CGI pipeline it made it easy to integrate engineering models into 3D animation software to generate both illustrations and animation. Those assets were coupled with in-house branded assets to create motion graphics as well as a device schematic.

AtriCure
Surgical Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation, Surgical Technique Guides, and Surgical Journal Submissions
I was originally approached by the lead authors through a personal recommended by Elsevier to illustrate the definitive surgical atlas titled, Surgical Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation: A Comprehensive Guide to Performing the Cox Maze IV Procedure. This book is a collaborative effort between Dr. Jonathan Philpott, Dr. Christian Zemlin, Dr. Ralph Damiano, AtriCure, and Elsevier.
There were two main challenges in this atlas. The first challenge was understanding and clearly conveying the movement of electrical waves throughout the atrial tissue of the heart. The second major challenge was the sheer volume of the task; 324 illustrations plus the book cover.
The book has enjoyed worldwide exposure and continues to train surgeons in both the understanding of and correct treatment procedures for patients with atrial fibrillation. It didn’t end there! AtriCure continued to need materials in the field to support their technologies and the surgical variations. This led to numerous surgical technique guides, pocket guides for the operating room, and promotional materials for tradeshows. As surgeons gained proficiency with the devices and techniques, they started to implement evolving and novel ways to utilize the technology and needed illustrations to support these surgical techniques in peer-reviewed journals.
As the illustrator, it’s not often you get to read something like this, but… “Adam Questell, our illustrator who created them (the illustrations), went to extraordinary length to understand the many, often complex aspects of wave propagation we wanted to explain and to find the most intuitive ways to present them. We look at him as the silent fourth author of the book.” - Dr. Jonathan Philpott
All-in-all this ongoing series includes medical illustration, surgical illustration, and information graphics utilizing 3D Illustration, 3D modeling, compositing, and line illustration (2D) techniques.
Merck
Merck and Co. - Merck Manuals Online and Merck Veterinary Manuals Online
Another great example of a client remembering me from a previous assignment (and company) and coming back for more! This assignment called for creating one multi-purpose image that best summarizes the extensive collection of specific health topics for each of the 27 over-arching categories found in the Merck Manuals Online Edition. It was followed up with the same mandate for the extensive collection of specific veterinary health topics within each of the 24 over-arching categories found in the Merck Veterinary Manuals Online Edition.
The first challenge was to generate a look with repeating design elements that could be utilized effectively across 27 different human-focused subjects and subsequently apply that to multiple animal species without placing too much emphasis on any species.
In the end, Merck gained a collection of cohesive images that offer an exciting visual element for each major category to visually support their definitive online health manuals.
All medical illustrations utilized 3D Illustration, 3D modeling, and compositing techniques.
